Charles Hamilton Bumgarner, Jr., 67, a highly respected stock farmer of Route 3, Elizabeth, died Sunday morning, December 9, in St. Joseph's Hospital, Parkersburg, following an extended illness.
He was born in Wirt County February 2, 1912, a son of the late Charles H. and Sally Bumgarner.
He was a retired farmer, a member of the Elizabeth United Methodist Church, a member of the Wirt County Farm Bureau, a director of the Camp Barbe Association, and had served as a member and president of the Wirt County Board of Education.
"Bummy," as he has been popularly known since his boyhood, has been among Wirt County's most responsible, concerned and conscientious citizens. He pitched in on many civic activities, always doing everything he could for the betterment of Wirt County. An outstanding football player in high school before it became Wirt High, he liked sports of all kinds - and hunting - and was a constant booster of worthwhile activities for youth.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Cline Bumgarner; four sons, Fred, of Palestine, Tom, of Spencer, and Mike and Phil, both of Elizabeth; three daughters, Mrs. Max (Mary Frances) Park, of Belmont, Mrs. William (Sharon) Meade, of Vienna, and Annette Bumgarner, a student at Glenville State College; one brother, Roy H. Bumgarner, of Elizabeth; three sisters, Mrs. Jean Harrison and Mrs. Florence Cline, both of Elizabeth, and Mrs. Helen Cheuvront, of Palestine; and the following eight grand-children: Doug and Shelly Bumgarner, Lora and John Park, Brian and Brett Meade, Mandy and Matt Bumgarner.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Elizabeth United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Wilbert (Casey) Stinespring officiating, and interment was in the Elizabeth K. of P. Cemetery. Matheny-Pomroy Funeral Home, City, was in charge of the arrangements.
