Death Claims Don Pomroy, Funeral Director

Donald R. Pomroy, 70, prominent and widely known Elizabeth businessman, died suddenly at his home at 7:45 p.m. yesterday (Wednesday, March 12). He had not been feeling well for about a week, but was out and downtown that afternoon. His death was unexpected.

He was born June 30, 1898 in Wirt County, son of the late William M. and Anna Hall Pomroy of Elizabeth.

For a short period when a young man, he worked in the oil fields of Mexico, but for about fifty years has been a funeral director. He succeeded his late father as owner and operator of the Pomroy Funeral Home.

He was a member of the Elizabeth United Methodist Church, of Junior Order of United American Mechanics Palestine Council No. 33, a charter member of the Lions Club of Elizabeth, and a member of the board of directors of Wirt County Bank. He was a member of the National and West Virginia Funeral Directors Associations.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruby Thrash Pomroy; two step-children, Mrs. Lonald Conforti, of Titusville, Fla., and Roscoe Belt, of Rt. 2, Palestine; one grandson, Don Tomlinson, City, a student at Morris Harvey College, Charleston; and six step-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother Ralph Pomroy.

Services will be held in the Pomroy Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 15, with the Rev. Don Coleman, City, and the Rev. Harry Foley, Parkersburg, officiating. Interment will be at the Elizabeth K. of P. Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be his fellow members of the board of directors of the local bank, Harry L. Righter, E.C. Andrick, Kenneth Mills, Robert W. Coplin, Denver Roberts and Linza Roberts.
