Cunningham Dies on Trip, Newport, R.I.

Charley Roosevelt Cunningham, a likeable Wirt County senior citizen, of Route 1, Elizabeth, died unexpectedly on his 70th birthday Thursday, June 26, while on a trip with the Wirt County Senior Citizens, at the Tredway Inn in Newport, Rhode Island.

He was born June 26, 1905, on Big Island Run in Ritchie County, a son of the late Samuel L. and Harriett Sinett Cunningham.

He was retired from the former American Viscose Co. in Parkersburg in 1967, and during recent years had been especially active with the Wirt Senior Citizens group.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Velma Williams Cunningham; two sons, Donald Ray Cunningham of Elizabeth, and Kenneth L. Cunningham of Parkersburg; a step-son, Douglas Shively, of Parkersburg; two daughters Betty Murray, of Elizabeth, and Nancy Morgan of Austin Tex.; a brother, Ard Cunningham, of Lost Creek; a half-brother, Hallie Hardbarger; six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a brother, a sister, and grandchild.

Funeral services were conducted at the Mace Funeral Home, City, at 2 p.m. Monday, with the Rev. Gayle Ruble officiating, and interment was in the Guthrie Cemetery on Munday Road.
