Charley Lightner Dies at Age of 93
C.B. (Charley) Lightner, aged 93, of Route 2, City, died Monday evening, June 29, at the Cedar Grove Nursing Home near Parkersburg following a long illness.
Born in Wirt County Nov. 3, 1865, he was a son of the late John and Adeline Williamson Lightner.
He was a member of the Two Ripple Baptist Church, Route 4, City, and the Junior Order of United American Mechanics, Council No. 33, Palestine. He was a retired farmer and at one time conducted music lessons throughout Wirt County.
Survivors include one daughter, Miss Lena Lightner, of Chester, W. Va.; two sons, Holly Lightner, of Cleveland, Ohio, and W.E. (Wiley) Lightner, of Chester; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Murray and Mrs. Martha Tanner, both of Route 1, City, Mrs. Rebecca Johnson, of Parkersburg, and Mrs. Sarah Cain, of Fairmont; one brother, Joe Lightner, of Parkersburg; six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Step-children are Marshall Goff, Route 4, City, and Delbert Goff, Toledo, Ohio.
Mr. Lightner was preceded in death by two wives, Icie Daugherty Lightner, and Susan Goff Lightner; and by three children, two sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday from the Center Valley Methodist Church, with the Rev. K.T. Board officiating, assiste[d] by the Rev. Ezra Higgins. Members of the Jr.O.U.A.M. lodge conducted graveside rites. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pomroy Funeral Home of Elizabeth was in charge of arrangements.
