G. W. Reed, Member of Roughriders, Passes Away (1957)

George William Reed, aged 86, of Route 3, City, died at this home early Monday morning, after becoming critically ill suddenly at 7 p.m. Sunday. He had been in poor health for the past nine years, during which period he was frequently a patient in the Veterans Hospital at Clarksburg, W. Va. He had been quite active this late summer and early fall, however, and had attended Sunday School the day before his death, and spent several enjoyable hours with visitors at his home.

He was born in Ritchie County, May 10, 1871, a son of the late Amaziah and Malinda Keck Reed. He served in the Spanish-American War, a member of Theodore Roosevelt's famed "Roughriders" of the 1st U. S. Volunteers. He was a charter member of the Parkersburg Post of Spanish-American War Veterans, and also a charter member and active attendant of the Beulah Humble Presbyterian Church in his home community.

Mr. Reed was also in the U. S. Naval Service, and as a veteran always maintained a keen interest in the Military services. He had spent some time in California, but most of his life in Wirt County.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Emma Belle Reed, the Journal’s popular Beulah Hill correspondent, to whom we extend out sympathy and respects; three sons, Atty. Louis Reed, administrative assistant to U. S. Senator Chapman Revercomb in Washington, and Wirt County’s prosecuting attorney, of Rt. 3, City; Edward Reed of Mesa, Ariz., and Henry Reed, of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters, Mrs. Emerick Higgins, of Dunbar, and Mrs. James A. Welch, Rt. 3, City; one brother, Alonzo Reed, Rt. 3, City; ten grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday from the Beulah Humble Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Robert Topping, Pastor, City, officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pomroy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
