Services Yesterday For Wirt Thorne, Jr.

Funeral services were conducted yesterday (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at Pomroy Funeral home, City, for one of Wirt County's eldest residents, Wirt Thorne, Jr., aged 93, of Palestine.

Mr. Thorne, widely known and well respected, passed away at his home at 7:35 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15. He had been in failing health the past few months.

The Rev. Paul Higgins officiated at the services, and interment was in the Palestine Cemetery.

Born in Wirt County August 14, 1876, he was a son of the late Samuel and Theodocia Dye Thorne. He was a farmer most of his life, and was a long time active member of the Wirt County Singers Association.

Survivors include a son, Darlington M. Thorne, at home; three daughters, Mrs. Corbett B. (Dorothy) Carpenter, Palestine, Mrs. H.O. (Dana) Perkins, of Williamstown, and Mrs. Thomas Edward (Margery) Brooks, Jr., Front Royal, Va.; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Robert E. Thorne, Canton, O.; and two sisters, Mrs. Ona Smith, Steubenville, O., and Mrs. Pauline Moore, Scio, O.

Mr. Thorne was preceded in death by his wife Mrs. Clara Thorne, in 1952, and by one son, Harold, and one daughter, Mrs. Vera Roberts.

Serving as pallbearers were H.O. Perkins, Thomas E. Brooks, Jr., French Robinson, Ray McFee, Paul Rich, and William Martin.
