Rites Held Saturday for F.L. Armstrong (1967)

Frank L. Armstrong, aged 91, of Route 3, Parkersburg, a highly respected long-time former Wirt Countian, passed away at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, in St. Joseph's Hospital.

Born at Peniel, Roane County, April 29, 1875, he was a son of the late William H. and Sarah Torrison Robey Armstrong.

He was a member of the Pettyville Methodist Church, and was a 50-year member and Past Master of Burning Springs Lodge No. 132, A.F. & A.M.

On two different occasions many years ago, Mr. Armstrong owned and operated general stores at Burning Springs. In one of those business ventures, his brother, Ben, was his partner. Most old-timers remember him by association with the grocery business.

A wide host of friends, however, remember him most vividly as the pleasant, easy-going but effective County Forest Protector for this area, as he served several years during the 1940's and 1950's in that capacity with the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources, from which he was retired.

Mr. Armstrong also had a keen interest, and some past dealings in the oil and gas business, especially in the Burning Springs and Creston areas. During the past several years, while a resident of Wood County, he made frequent trips back up the Little Kanawha for pleasant visits with both old-time friends and his friends of the younger generations alike. Through all of his many active years, he maintained an especially keen interest in the conservation of natural resources, and promoted a variety of programs for betterment in this field.

Survivors are two sons, Forrest L. Armstrong and Eugene Darrell Armstrong, both of Parkersburg; one brother, Ben B. Armstrong, also of Parkersburg; four, grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Armstrong, three sisters, and one brother.

Funeral services were conducted at the Pomroy Funeral Home, City, at 2 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Charles Eaton officiating, and interment was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery at Parkersburg. Members of Burning Springs Lodge No. 132, A.F. & A.M., and other fellow Masons conducted graveside rites.
