E.L McCoy Rites Held Here Sunday

Funeral services for Edward Leon McCoy, aged 48, of Akron, Ohio, who died Wednesday evening, August 6, in Akron City Hospital, were held at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Two Ripple Baptist Church.

The Rev. Joe Hutchinson, pastor of the church, and the Rev. Ezra Higgins officiated at the services and burial was in the Elizabeth K. of P. Cemetery.

Born April 16, 1921, he was a son of Mrs. Mary McCoy, Rt. 4, City, and the late Ross H. McCoy.

After spending his boyhood and school years here, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy prior to World War II, and was serving aboard the U.S.S. West Virginia at Pearl Harbor when war broke out. He was later aboard the U.S.S. Lexington, which was downed in the Battle of the Choral Sea. He served in the Navy for six years and was awarded three Silver Stars and two Bronze Star medals.

Residing in Wirt County for some time after returning from the service, he then went to Akron where he was employed as a truck driver for about 12 years, and for the past ten years did mechanical work on trucks and tractor trailers. In this capacity, he was seriously injured about five or six years ago when a large truck tire exploded, resulting in his hospitalization for about six weeks with a head injury.

Survivors in addition to his mother include his widow, Mrs. Florence McCoy; three sons, Ross McCoy, with the U.S. Air Force at Denver, Colo., Thomas McCoy and Leon McCoy, Jr., both of the family home in Akron; one sister, Mrs. Luennis (Elodene) Robinson, of Hagerstown, Md.; and one brother, Thomas McCoy of Akron.

McCray Funeral Home, City, was in charge of arrangements for the local services.
