Funeral Rites Tuesday For Rev. A.F. Monroe (1955)

The Rev. A.F. Monroe, aged 75, of 400 Milford Street, Clarksburg, died last Saturday, April 2, at his home. He had been in ill health only for a short while.

A Wirt County resident for most of his life, he had an exceptionally wide circle of friends, and was highly regarded and admired for the steadfastness of his faith.

He was born in Wirt County on Sept. 23, 1889, the son of the late William and Mary Dye Monroe, and was a member and former pastor of the Elizabeth Baptist Church, and also served in other pastorates of this area, having been actively engaged in the ministry for more than 30 years.

He was a former member and president of the Wirt County Board of Education. He was a good carpenter and painter, and as late as last fall had spent several days here, painting the house of a close friend. Although residing in Clarksburg the last several years of his life, Rev. Monroe greatly enjoyed occasional visits back here with his relatives and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ruth Fitzpatrick Monroe; one daughter, Mrs. Basil M. (Freda) Merrill, of Parkersburg (by his second wife, Addie Phillips Monroe); one step-daughter, Mrs. H.E. Cline, of Cutler, O.; one step-son, Robert Harper, of Columbus, Ohio; one brother, A.O. (Bern) Monroe, of near Creston; two sisters, Mrs. G. E. Phillips, of Route 1, City, and Ruth Monroe of Canton, Ohio; and one granddaughter. One grandchild preceded him in death.
