Rites Monday For Ken Amos, Former Assessor

Wirt County lost a valued and long useful citizen late last week with the Friday night, March 14, 1980, death of former Assessor James Kendall (Ken) Amos, 72, of Rt. 1, Elizabeth - Palestine Road.

He passed away at his residence a little more than two weeks after he had returned from University Hospital in Morgantown, where it was diagnosed that he had been suffering for several months with cancer.

He was born March 20, 1907, in Wirt County, a son of the late James and Minnie Amos.

A popular resident, a kind and helpful neighbor, he was elected to six consecutive terms as Assessor of Wirt County following 7-1/2 years duty as Deputy Assessor, making a total of 31-1/2 years service in that office until his resignation on June 16, 1975. He was a Republican.

Mr. Amos also was a life-long farmer and an outstanding gardener. He was a member of the Bethesda Baptist Church and of Council No. 33, Jr. Order of United American Mechanics, both of Palestine.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Erpha Slack Amos, to whom he had been married for fifty years last October; a son, Lawrence K. Amos, of Rt. 1, Elizabeth; a daughter, Mrs. Paul (Mary) Baileys, of Portland, Mich.; four sisters, Mrs. Noe (Thelma) Ward and Mrs. Evelyn Dowler Starcher, both of Parkersburg, Mrs. Russell (Lena) Heatherly, of Florida, and Mrs. Harry (Elizabeth) Knotts, of Rt. 1, Elizabeth; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers.

Services were conducted at Elizabeth Baptist Church at 2 p. m. Monday, with the Rev. J. Dean Cameron and the Rev. Charles Hambel officiating. Interment was in the Elizabeth K. of P. Cemetery. Matheny-Pomroy Funeral Home, City, was in charge of the arrangements.
