H.T. Bumgarner Dies in California (1966)

FUNERAL SERVICES HELD HERE TUESDAY

Harry T. Bumgarner, aged 83, native Wirt Countian and long time prominent Elizabeth resident, died Friday, March 25, at Glendale, Calif. He had resided there, near the home of his son, since last summer. Earlier this month he had suffered a fall, receiving a broken hip, and he remained in critical condition for several days until his death last week.

Son of the late Jacob and Emma Thorn Bumgarner, he was born in Wirt County March 9, 1883. He was a member of Wirt Lodge No. 82, A.F. & A.M., City, and of Palestine Council No. 33, Jr.O.U.A.M. He was a member of the Methodist Church.

Mr. Bumgarner served as a deputy sheriff in Wirt County during the term of his brother, the late C. H. Bumgarner, Sr., and later served for four years as Postmaster of Elizabeth. He was engaged in automotive dealerships locally, and for many years was engaged in farming in the Shelving Rock area, and also did a lot of oil and gas leasing work.

Through the years he acquired several tracts of business and residential properties in Elizabeth, which he rented.

Interested in a variety of civic affairs, Mr. Bumgarner usually was quick to voice his opinion or to take a stand, and always maintained a keen sense of humor through his long and energetic lifetime.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Naomi Athey Bumgarner; one son, Herbert C. Bumgarner, of LaCanada, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. R.A. (Cornelia) Litkenhaus, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Mrs. Ira (Evelyn) Connolly, Jr., of Belpre, Ohio; three grandchildren; a brother, Albert Bumgarner, of Uniontown, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

The body arrived by plane at Columbus, Ohio, Sunday night, where it was received by the McCray Funeral Home and brought back to Elizabeth.

Memorial funeral services were conducted at the McCray Funeral Home by the Rev. Harry Foley, local Methodist minister, at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Interment was made in the Elizabeth K. of P. Cemetery, where Masonic graveside rites were conducted.
