Obituary

Mrs. Nellie Pettit Bumgarner, 74, one of Elizabeth's more popular and widely respected citizens, died unexpectedly at her home on Washington Street Thursday, February 26, at about 2 p.m.

She was born here February 22, 1902, a daughter of the late George W. and Fannie Smalley Pettit.

She was a member of the Elizabeth United Methodist Church; a charter member and Past Worthy Matron of Wirt Chapter No. 113, Order of the Eastern Star, and had served on the staff of installing officers for the annual installation ceremony in that organization for many years; and was an active member and Past Noble Grand of Elizabeth Rebekah Lodge No. 128.

Mrs. Bumgarner had an especially pleasant personality and a keen sense of humor, coupled with traits of helpfulness and concern among her neighbors and associates, and she willingly assumed responsibilities and duties in her organizational activities that endeared her to many.

She was a member and president of Wirt County High School's (then Elizabeth High School) first graduating class in 1922. She taught school for a term at Creston, two terms in Southern West Virginia, and two terms in Elizabeth Grade School.

She is survived by her husband, Roy H. Bumgarner, to whom she was married on September 27, 1927; two sons, Robert H. Bumgarner of Marietta, O., and Ray H. (Tuck) Bumgarner of The Plains, O.; one daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Sally Ann) West of South Charleston; a sister, Mrs. Robert W. (Mildred) Coplin, City; and eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, and by four brothers and one sister.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Elizabeth United Methodist Church, with the pastor, the Rev. Charles Wilkinson, City and the Rev. Vairl C. Winter of Ravenswood officiating. Interment was in the Elizabeth K. of P. Cemetery. The Pomroy Funeral Home, City, was in charge of the arrangements.
